It is located 122 kilometres (76 mi) east of Red Deer. It was named for Halkirk, Scotland. It is the birthplace of Shane Doan, a Canadian professional ice hockey forward playing in the NHL for the Phoenix Coyotes. Halkirk has a yearly bull-a-rama in August.
