Review Text

What could a girl, even one born in the lucky Year of the Dragon, do to become famous? Hai Yin's problem is of her own making and hardly crucial however much it may reflect woman's place in Taiwan; consequently it doesn't trigger sympathy the way Su-Ling's concern for his pet does in The Pai-Pai Pig (1967) nor is it resolved so craftily. At the Lantern Festival the Mayor will give a prize to the best - and that will of necessity be Hai Yin's since no other course is indicated by the story. Otherwise one might wonder at her placing first, and children well may - the picture showing her dragon lantern full length shows another also, and it's hardly less impressive. Too slight (and a bare 26 pages) for independent readers, this doesn't shape up as a picture book either insofar as the drawings, blithe notations in two and four colors, don't fill it out sufficiently.
