One night walking along the bank, "I came," says Gordon, "within fifteen yards of a huge hippopotamus, who stood and looked at me, his hide glistening in the light of the full moon. He was in no hurry at all, and stopped several times on his way to the river, where he plumped in with a great splash. After a while I came on another, and waved him in with my handkerchief." On other occasions Gordon describes herds of the hippopotami rushing through the water with "a roar like that of a cataract." In an open boat, near Lardo, he was in danger of being swamped by them. "Sometimes they are very fierce, and bite the boats in two. Their jaws are immense, and go back to their ears." Occasionally Gordon shot one and got as much from it for his people as from twenty cows. "It seems cruel," he says, "to kill these animals, but we want food; and you kill fleas without any hesitation and do not eat them as we do the hippopotami. I think I do not err when I say that you kill the flea with a sort of vicious joy--a fiendish vengeance." Herds of giraffes and antelopes were seen, and lions were, in some parts, heard roaring at night. The antelopes would stand on hillocks and stare at the party like statues on pedestals. Camelopards are seen browsing on the tops of trees. "These creatures," he says, "are splendid when they stand still, but when they move in the long grass they are like heavily-laden ships, and pitch and roll about wonderfully, keeping their long necks well to the front."
