But still the painted canvas looked unimportant in the midst of such sumptuous woodwork and was as a whole unsatisfactory. brought to this country the splendid woodwork from which the mantelpiece was made, he also brought a gilded polychrome statue that dominated the shrine of old in Mexico. So, finally, by the force of artistic judgment and American good taste, Saint Joseph came once more into his honors among the woodwork so deftly carved and dedicated to his perpetual glory several centuries ago. Nor did the victory of this artistic statue end when it was placed at the most dominating situation over the fireplace in this great art patron's house. To its owner there appeared a. possible incongruity in having a pious statue once dedicated to divine worship standing as a. pure ornament in his dining room. Above all, the idea of this precious statue again appearing as a victim of trade and barter grew to be more and more distasteful and even shocking to Mr. Gcllatly. He clearly saw that with the advancing tide of business this exquisite and splendid example of religious art might easily be forced again into an auction room to be knocked down to the highest bidder. As it was hardly to be expected that chance would a. second time deliver this statue into as considerate hands or place it among such sympathetic surroundings, when Mr. Gcllatly feels the days of his present household are numbered, he has decided to give the statue and the old Spanish woodwork with the original and highly decorated altar as a memorial to his memory in some religious institution.
