Review Text

Using as a framework the spiritual awakening of a 14-year old boy during a Saturday night service in Harlem, this novel grapples with the agonies of a black family during the Depression of the 1920s. Praying beside him, his parents have their own dark pasts, and the symmetry of their misdeeds acts as a foil for the epiphany John is about to experience. Set over two days and a very long night, Baldwin lovingly uses close detail to create his characters as they tossle with their beliefs, and descend into their very souls. His narrative style, and his hard realism coupled with deep symbolism, has made this an enduring classic. (Kirkus UK)show more
