Kenny served as a critic and editor at the film magazine Premiere from 1996 until it ceased publication in 2007. Since the magazine's dissolution, Kenny has worked extensively as a freelance critic, contributing to a variety of publications and websites. Kenny attended William Paterson University, where he majored in English literature. He joined the staff of Premiere in June 1996 after having worked as a freelance film and music critic for several publications, including The Village Voice. One of Kenny's first assignments for the magazine was editing David Foster Wallace's "David Lynch Keeps His Head," which would later be collected in Wallace's book A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do more
