In five minutes a second dose was to be given if the first did not take effect, and Lovell stood with the bottle and saucer in his hand, anxiously watching the face of his darling. He had no watch or clock to mark the time, but from long practice he could judge almost as accurately as any clock could tell him, and barely had the specified time elapsed before the second dose was poured out, and he again raised the child's head. "Drink a little drop more for daddy," said Lovell, coaxingly, as she turned her head aside. "It's nasty," said Snow, after she had tasted it, and pushing the saucer aside. "But drink it, deary, for daddy, like you did the snail broth," said Lovell, in an eager tone. She raised her filmy eyes to his face, and tried to smile; then drank off the medicine without a murmur. A minute or two later there was a sound at the door, and looking round, Lovell saw the doctor, but he did not leave his post of watching beside Snow. "Come in," he said. "Come and look at her. Ain't she better, doctor?" he asked eagerly, as the doctor laid his finger on her pulse. "She's taken two doses," he said, glancing at the bottle of medicine which stood on the table.-" I'll give her something else in a minute if that has no effect. Where is the herb tea you gave her?" "Out there," said Lovell, pointing to the door. "I threw the whole lot away when I found it made her worse." Before the doctor could speak again, Mrs. Cooper made her appearance, but drew back when Lovell said in a threatening tone--"I've got the doctor here now, and you'd better bring some more of that herb tea, for him to find out what is in it to upset Snow."
