Boo! Watch out for this rollicking, cumulative counting book for a Hallowe'en treat that's more playful than scary.

When a little ghost goes slip-sliding down the hallway, he suddenly hears ... a groan! Turns out it's only a friendly mummy, who shuffles along with the ghost, until they encounter ... a monster! As the cautious explorers continue, they find a surprise at every turn - and add another adorably ghoulish friend to their tally. But you'll never guess who is the scariest creature in the house!

Review quote

Ghost in the House, full of rhythm and rhyme, is the perfect blend of spooky creatures and little giggles. There is a great flow to Paquette's language [...] this picture book has much to delight young listeners. Adam Record's illustrations are wonderfully modern. Full of character and texture they compliment Paquette's narrative perfectly by helping to build tension and create giggles. With its bouncy, repetitive rhymes, quirky illustrations and continual surprises, this is a ghost story to savour - and read aloud time after time. Recommended. Inis

About Ammi-Joan Paquette

Ammi-Joan Paquette has never met a ghost, mummy, monster, skeleton or witch - as far as she knows. This book, she says, was inspired by a game she used to play with her sister: "Most of the details have been lost to time, but I still remember the shivery thrill I got when we played it. So, I drew on that same energy to write a spooky picture book, which eventually became Ghost in the House." In addition to writing, Ammi-Joan is also a literary agent representing authors of children's books. She lives with her family in the US outside Boston, Massachusetts. Visit Ammi-Joan online at

Adam Record started doodling on a bench in church. He started to get serious about drawing only after someone bought one of his drawings. He finds inspiration in old children's books and vintage posters. This is his first picture book. Adam lives in the US in Utah, with his wife and two children. Visit Adam online at
