Review Text

Few books on this subject approach the candor and range present in this study of Why the German people succumbed to Hitler's regime in the first place and how they are affected by that "undigested past" today. The author has avoided a narrow consistency and easy answers by casting about half of his book in the form of a series of informal discussions, with two young Germans, one a Social Democrat and the other a Christian Democrat, a scholarly British Tory, and "an American civic leader of liberal persuasion" all taking part. They find much to learn from each other but seldom reach any real agreement. Alternate sections of the book develop analyses of economic, political and social factors in greater detail, providing a complementary background to the conversations, and bringing them more within the scope of an American audience. An unorthodox approach has its rewards in readability as well as instructiveness. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
