Geostatistics is a branch of mathematics that deals with the sampling, analysis, interpretation and display of phenomena that fluctuate in space. Although not all geostatistical methods are probabilistic in nature, the most important accomplishments in the field have been in estimation and forecasting, extending probabilistic methods of stochastic processes and time series analysis to the spatial domain. This book gives the only available comprehensive collection of definitions of geostatistical terms. It lists more than 600 entries selected from the book and journal literature through the end of 1989. Where appropriate, multiple meanings have been included for specific terms. Cross-references abound to help the reader when the definitions of a word leads to the search for other terms. Although all the definitions are in English, equivalent terms are provided in alphabetized lists in Chinese, French, German, Greek, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. This volume will provide a useful reference for students, scientists, engineers, and others concerned with the meaning of terms found in the geostatistical literature and heard in professional practice. Definitions and entries have been prepared with multiple levels of rigor and complexity, in order to provide help to a readership that may range from inexperienced practitioners to advanced more

Review quote

"This work is of the highest quality. Superbly produced and bound, its definitions and translations are easily understood. It will be a valuable reference for collaborating statisticians and geologists for many years. Speaking for the statistical community, I thank the Committee on Geostatistics and congratulate them on an outstanding contribution. Perhaps we can use this work as a model for similar volumes from our other application fields." --Journal of the American Statistical Association"An important contribution to making the subject understandable. . . .Will be indispensable to geostatisticians working with languages other than English. . . .The layout and presentation of the book are excellent. . . .A very useful book for anyone trying to read papers on geostatistics." --Geophysics"An Indispensable reference for all workers in, users of, and educators teaching geostatistical methods for all areas of earth science." --Journal of Geological Education"A self-contained, easy to read glossary. . . .Useful as a reference, especially with respect to controversial usage of terms. . . .Constitutes an important contribution and achievement for the scientific community." --Computers & Geosciences"[Recommended] to anybody with a strong interest in geostatistics, and particularly to those who occasionally encounter a problem of definition, understanding, or vocabulary." --Mathematical Geology"This new volume has long been needed and will be an indispensable reference for all researchers and practitioners of geostatistics--English-speaking or otherwise." --GSA Today"The format and printing are clear. This book will be useful to libraries serving applied statisticians, mining companies, or earth scientists, especially outside the English-speaking world." --Geochemica et Cosmochemica Acta"The authors have primarily focused on the technical meanings of words, which appear in few if any dictionaries. Definition and entries have been prepared in order to provide asistance to a readership that may range from inexperienced practitioners to advanced readers." --Pure and Applied Geophysicsshow more
