Review Text

A gentle, meandering Love Story with a bittersweet coda punctuated by the guns of World War I. The young lovers who unite with Georgian (George V) decorum, are at first divided by class, alas, and diction - Stewart's father is a stern and formidable exemplar of the way of the gentleman although but a senior editor in a publishing house; and Raney's family owns a tobacco store in a drab slum and they are earnest members of the Plymouth Brethren. As Stewart instructs Raney in a less bumptious syntax and the two tryst in theatres and quiet walks, the parents are gradually brought to heel. The engagement is formalized, Stewart's career in journalism is on the rise, and then Raney dies, leaving Stewart with a lingering tenderness and a grief that will evolve into patient acceptance. Some quiet humor in the scenes where modal existences clash, but it's mostly a musk rose keepsake. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
