All braids shall consist of cotton, linen, or silk, and shall be closely woven and made up as specified under the individual con ductors. 288. The exterior cotton braid shall, unless otherwise specified, be thoroughly saturated with a black insulating waterproof compound, which shall be neither injuriously affected by nor have an injurious effect on the braid during the baking test. Lead. 289. Lead shall be applied in a sheath of uniform thickness. Armoring. 290. (a) The wire shall be made of soft steel, galvanized; shall show a tensile strength of from 55,000 to 90,000 pounds per square inch, with an elongation in 8 inches of not less than 12 per cent. (b) The wire before galvanizing shall be well annealed. (c) The galvanizing shall be done by the hot process, the coating to be smooth, thoroughly and evenly applied. (d) The number of ends and wire sizes shall conform to Tables IV, V, VI, VII. The weave shall be of the basket type, strands laid closely together, fiat and parallel, firmly binding the conductor. 291. Copper wire armoring.--When required, the steel armoring shall be replaced by hard-drawn copper wire of the same gauge. Copper wire armoring shall not be painted. Bronze armor shall be used on alternating current cables, in lieu of galvanized iron wire. Paint. 292. Before painting, the wire shall be shellacked or treated in other approved manner to make the paint properly adhere. The paint shall be uniformly applied in a single coat. 293. All galvanized armor shall be painted, unless otherwise directed. Paint shall be of such nature as will not discolor additional coats of white paint. 4 Measured Dimenions. 294.
