Review Text

Anglo, Hispano, Indian, hippie. . . and what Val says caustically to stepbrother Ricardo - "The Indians help each other. The Anglos compete. You forget the one about how the hippies live on LSD" - about sums it up. Shipped off to New Mexico after a publicized pot party - her stepfather is running for Congress - she finds that the father she hasn't seen for five years has, in marrying, acquired not only a Spanish-American wife but also sullen, dumpy Rosita and disdainful Ricardo. Pretty blonde Val is no prize herself (as she is the last to admit) but between helping out in the arts and crafts shop and transforming Rosita into a potential queen of the fiesta, she's kept busy enough not to sink into the Group's pot-luck lethargy. Quite obviously - to everyone but Val - they have an inordinate taste for stale candy too, and thanks to Ricardo she's headed off on the brink of finding out the hard way. The Southwestern lore isn't worth her troubles. (Kirkus Reviews)
