Our customer reviews

Stella Riley has the knack of combining realism, depth of feelings and emotion, with historical accuracy. Her wit and choice of words make her story-telling very compelling. I adore her books. This one is a bit heavy on historical fact really, but her characters charge through the book, breathing life. You are there with them! The storyline is basically, that due to a condition in her uncle\'s will, the somewhat shrewish heroine, Venetia, a staunch Royalist, is compelled to marry Gabriel, a tough, Round-head colonel. They fight like cat and dog to begin with and because the writer shows the perspective from each party, you can see the way each is thinking and re-acting. The other characters are strong, and I got very fond of Phoebe, the younger sister. It was nice too, to recognise old faces from previous books, popping up in the story. As time goes on, Vanetia becomes less shrewish as Gabriel\'s infinite goodness and common sense finally wins her over. The story culminates at the trial and execution of Charles 1, quite harrowing in its accuracy, since it takes it from the history pages and brings it shockingly into reality. A brilliant more
