Description

This volume was published to coincide with two major events dedicated to the physician and patriot Ferdinando Zannetti (Monte San Savino, 1801 - Florence, 1881) as part of the 150 th Anniversary of Italian Unity: the show held in Palazzo Medici Riccardi from November 10, 2011, to January 31, 2012, and the one-day conference hosted by the Casa Martelli museum in Florence on November 24, 2011. Ferdinando Zannetti is well known for having extracted the bullet from Garibaldi s foot after he was wounded in the battle of Aspromonte in 1862. Here, he is recalled as a major figure of the Italian Risorgimento. The volume gives evidence of his human qualities and his career as physician and citizen, drawing on sources such as letters from relatives, friends, and patients. There are reproductions of documents and memorabilia from the Rubieri-Zannetti Papers in the Biblioteca Moreniana, the Biblioteca Biomedica in Careggi, the Fondazione Spadolini Nuova Antologia, and other collections. Exhibits include surgical instruments, field equipment, a firearm and a signed note from Garibaldi, celebratory works by Moricci and Fattori, and many other items. From the documents provided, one can explore the physician s life starting with the war in Lombardy and his service in the Tuscan Army, continuing with the Second War of Independence in which he took part as chief surgeon in the Tuscan Health Service and ending with his appointment as Senator of the Kingdom. Introductions by Carla Fracci, Cristina Acidini, and Gianfranco Gensini and an essay by Monica Bietti. Contributions by Marta Gori, Donatella Lippi, Laura Vannucci, Francesca Fiorelli Malesci, and Lucia Frigenti, with many documents in color.
