A monkey skull, a black mamba; a flash of precognition, lightning. Although I've never quite got used to them, I've become more in tune with messages from my ancestors. They're a feisty lot, their methods have been dramatic. My grandmother, for example, once tried to take out one of my boyfriends with a lightning strike, while my grandfather on my father's side famously prevented a wedding from taking place by causing a flash flood in the middle of winter. My dear great aunt, bless her heart, made a red rose flower in my garden on the loneliest Valentine's Day of my life. Some of my friends and family have regarded these portents and omens as mere coincidence, others have dismissed them outright. Most arch a quizzical eyebrow or roll baleful eyes heavenward. What does a white gal know about that kind of stuff? But I have spent too long interacting with the ancestors now to doubt their power. Our ancestors don't die if they live in our dreams, they say in Sotho. Badimo barena ba ka se hwe ge ba phela ditorong tsa rena They don't die, they just change.
