Review Text

The Games are the Olympics of 1968 and while it isn't very sporting to borrow from publisher releases, this is their commercial "subject novel" for the spring. And although we're not willing to give it any Prize, we're not ready to argue against its commercial qualifications even though there isn't too much sex. There can't be - particularly since those involved are long-distance runners. Overall, this deals with the attempt to locate the Olympics in Latin America, Santa Anna, even though the venue means a dangerous altitude for the competitors. They are (a) Scott Reynolds, an American, kind of a freak of nature with a super-efficient heart which gives him an edge; (b) Sunny Pintubi, a barefoot boy from Australia and (c) a young Englishman who under the tutelage of a former prize-winner with an obsessive mystique of competition is ready to throw away his wife and his life.... Papier-machinated from beginning to end and all ready for the Hollywood schlockmeisters. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
