The didactic habit persists in his custom of introducing his novels by prefaces, setting forth the objects of the works they introduce. The preface of Le Disciple is an epochmaking production, at once a sermon and the manifesto of a new school. It is addressed to the youths of France, to whom Bourget appeals in Theodore de Banville's eloquent lines: --"Vous en qui je salue une nouvelle aurore Vous tous qui m'aimerez Jeunes hommes des temps qui ne sont pas encore O bataillons sacres!" These sacred battalions of the future are called upon to cultivate two great virtues--the power of loving, and the power of willing--and to beware of the hypercritical spirit. The evil of such a spirit leading Hubert Liauran to doubt even his mother's love the writer had already portrayed in Cruelle Enigme. This preface is an apology for the psychological novel. In opposition to Realists, Bourget asserts the importance of the spiritual element as against the material in man's nature. "Science of to-day," he writes, "science that is sincere and modest, recognises that beyond the limits of its analysis extends the domain of the unknowable. Old Littre, who was a saint, spoke eloquently of that ocean of mystery washing our very shores, but over the waters of which we have no barque to carry us. To those who tell you that beyond that ocean there is nothing but blackness and death, have the courage to reply, 'You do not know.' And, since you know, since you feel that there is a soul within you, strive that that soul may not die before your body.
