Response by GENERAL Guns P. THURSTON: This is the first time, as I am informed, that these devoted volunteer departments of our war service have received the compliment of a toast from our Society. ' It is but just they should have their full measure of recognition and praise already long delayed. It was one of the memorable features of the. great conflict, that in the time of apparentwavering and uncertainty, when the resources of the government were most heavily drained, when taxation, disaster, and delay most threatened our existence as a nation, that, wholly independent of the national treasury, millions of money and vast stores of supplies were gathered by these noble commissions, and given as a free and loving gift to the army, as if to assure us that the loyal arm was strong enough, and its great heart warm enough for any labor or sacrifice. Ungrateful, indeed, would we be, if we failed to remember to-night, those whose loyalty, humanity, and Christian devotion served so much at times to 'smooth the rough edge of war; who, by their contributions and presence, relieved the ills of the hospital; who gave to the wounded the benefit of woman's tenderness and care; who pressed into the field, and at times even shared the dangers of the front; and who carried to us the tangible assurance that there were busy hands and loving hearts in our far-ofi' homes at the North to cheer us to renewed exertion.
