Description

for SATB unaccompanied The wonderful choral music of Howard Skempton has a unique voice that is instantly recognizable. Four by the Clock, which sets words by Longfellow, is a rich and brooding piece that although quiet and slow throughout, fizzes with a barely contained energy and excitement for the 'dawn that is to be'.show more

Review quote

The setting is very simple, moving solely in crotchets and minims with no rests and a single dynamic marking (p) to create a sense of relentless progress. Even the transition from one verse to the next is not marked by a break or slowing of tempo. The clean sonorities and soporific character would make this a good piece near the end of a concert - before you jolt your audience awake with Chick, chick, chicken! or A Modern Major-General, assuming that you have Encores for Choirs 2 to hand. * Armin Zanner, Music Teacher May 2005 *show more
