Review Text

A beautifully written memoir from the author of 44: A Dublin Memoir, the number one Irish bestseller and nominee for the Irish Times Non-Fiction Award. When Peter Sheridan's father dies suddenly, family skeletons rattle their way out of the cupboard. For 47 years there has been another woman in his father's life. This woman, Doris, lives across the Irish Sea in Blackburn, England, but she writes regularly. After hearing of her former lover's death, she makes a pilgrimage to visit his grave, placing on it a rose for every year of their love. Peter's mother has to try to grin and bear this, knowing that she cannot change the fact that her husband had another great love before he was caught under her own spell. The indomitable Ma, who holds the family together, is the true heroine of this intensely moving and yet wittily written book. For Peter, coming to terms with his grief is a rite of passage. Losing a parent conjures up all kinds of emotions. He has to try to fill the gap left by his father. There is also the nagging doubt of not having the opportunity of saying a proper goodbye. Peter thinks back to the death of his grandfather and a brother who died at ten. His grief sets him off on his own pilgrimage to visit Doris in Blackburn, where he tries to understand and sympathize with the woman who so selflessly loved his father. This has to be one of the finest memoirs ever written. The reader immediately empathises with the ups and downs of family life, and the inextricable bonds which tie us to those we love. Very highly recommended. (Kirkus UK)show more
