Review Text

When their synagogue is vandalized - daubed with swastikas - the Deckers are shocked by the expression of such hatred. But soon the teenage culprit, desperately in need of psychiatric help, is caught and dispatched to a revolutionary wilderness camp for treatment. But when he and his two therapists are then found murdered, something far more complex and evil begins to come to light. Kellerman's latest novel sees the return of LA detective Peter Decker and his Orthodox Jewish wife Rina and once again skilfully combines the rituals and beliefs of the Jewish faith with a gripping, multi-layered story of psychological motivation. This time Kellerman's focus is on the plight of young people but under unbearable pressure by their parents to succeed - and the criminal lengths to which those parents will go to ensure success. Paralleling the main plot is the acutely observed portrait of Rina's adolescent son, Jacob as he struggles to find his own identity, to reconcile his religion with the temptations of modern life and to redefine his relationship with his step-father. While one cannot help wondering whether some of the psychological insights derive from husband and fellow writer, Jonathan, this without a doubt is Faye writing at the height of her powers and should ensure even wider readership for this bestselling author.
