About Yasmin John-Thorpe

Yasmin John-Thorpe is a children's author, fiction and nonfiction writer and mentor. Two of her children's short stories were published in a school reader by MacMillan Publishing, London, England. She was one of only four authors, whose short story was selected by GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceutical for publication in a children's book for hospitalized young children. Yasmin has mentored young and older writers, by going into schools to assist young students to hone their creative writing abilities and by teaching writing classes at Okanagan College. In 1994, with the help of four other writers, she co-founded the Penticton Writers and Publishers, a local group of writers helping writers. More recently, Yasmin trekked the Camino de Santiago de Compostela, a pilgrimage walk of 500 miles, across Southern France and Northern Spain, to raise funds for the Raise a Reader program which she organizes with the Penticton Herald. After hosting several creative writing contests for young Okanagan Valley writers, Yasmin launched an annual writers' camp for youth 8 to 18 years of age. Yasmin has received the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia Community Service Award for her volunteer work, and an Honorary Fellow Award from Okanagan College for her work with literacy and youth.show more
