She paced among the wealth of silken piles, Where at his open shop the merchant sate, Cross-legged before the store of perfumed isles, That basked within the sun's flame-glowing gate, While o'er her heart in fitful fancies whirled, The mystic drama of a virgin world. Anon time fanned each girlish phantasy With all the eloquence of master-wrong, Or sightless bard with Godlike agony Smote the stern chord of his heroic song; From many a harp she caught the shriek of Crime, Death-haunted down the dark abyss of Time. Around her danced the witchery of the South, Each sensuous shape of strange divinities, Breathed from the poet's golden-arrowed mouth, Haunting the copse, and mere, the stream, and skies, While Genius wrought 'mid careworn solitude, Some spell to charm Humanity's wild mood. Here couched the chief beneath a sullen tent, Though chafed his host before the leaguered walls, While from the clang of Battle's tournament, Vainly the clarion to her champion calls, While o'er Earth thrills the doom of loveliness, A shrinking wife's heroic tenderness.
