Review Text

The issues that divided Royalists and Roundheads, the tactics of war in 17th century England, the nature of the men who fought, comprise the background of this colorful historical novel by the author of Mohawk Valley (1958, 754 J-240) and Escape From France (1961, 219 J-105). The plot itself is concerned with the development of Neil Carey, a student at Cambridge, who is uncommitted at the outbreak of the Civil War but whose brother is a strong Royalist supporter while his cousin believes with equal intensity in the cause of Parliament. Reluctantly, Neil follows his brother and father, somewhat spurred on by the dynamic Royalist Owen Price. The internal strife and petty jealousies among the King's men add another dimension to the struggle as Neil is challenged to prove himself on many occasions. Swashbuckling duels performed with smallsword, the exciting rescue of the Royal Standard, Neil's imprisonment and escape from the Roundheads and his vindication when sentenced to death on a second capture are a few of the adventures in this elaborate, tight-knit tale. Seventeenth Century England, its people and ideals come alive in an authenticated, vivid portrayal. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
