Excerpt: ...While the great laws of God's universe, and the H principles of His government, are as unchangeable as Himself, the primary sounds form themselves into countless chords, and the wondrous trinity of colour breaks out into a thousand hues. The restless mind can stretch itself in all directions, and find a shoreless ocean still beyond; the yearning heart can love and long, without satiety or disappointment, if only its compass point true. The eye, the ear, the touch, the taste, the smell, and all the undefined sensibilities of the complex physical machinery, can expatiate in a variety that is never exhausted, though underlying it all is the stability of laws and principles that neither sink nor swerve. And if this be true of that outer world with which we are daily brought into contact, what shall we say of the blessed book of God's revelation, written and made known to meet all the needs and cravings of this same compound being, this man, "so fearfully and wonderfully made"? Not less needy and craving surely because so wrecked and ruined, not less sensitive in heart or frame since "discord on the music fell, and darkness on the glory." True, this precious book of truth may have more to do with restoring than even with creating--may tell more of Calvary than of Eden; but we are not therefore brought within a more bounded horizon, or introduced into a field of less varied research. If the patriarch Job could say, as his mind ranged from "things under the waters" to the heavens which "He hath furnished by His Spirit," "Lo, these are parts of His ways, but how little a portion is heard of Him"--the apostle to the Gentiles could ask for himself and others that they might "be able to...show more
