Review Text

Tapply's third outing for Boston lawyer-sleuth Brady Coyne (40-ish, divorced) is more novel than mystery, starting with Brady's leisurely account of the sad career of his client/friend Eddie Donagan: once a promising pitcher for the Red Sox, Eddie suddenly lost control, quit the team, and eventually left his devoted wife and small son. Now, however, Eddie and wife Jan (who lives with her wealthy parents) are reunited by terror: their ten-year-old son, E.J., has been kidnapped. Even after a $150,000 ransom is paid (with Brady as tense deliveryman), the boy is not returned. Then Eddie disappears - while Brady starts getting cryptic clues from one of the kidnappers. Is Eddie himself somehow involved with the kidnapping? Is the crime connected to his bygone rise-and-fall as a baseball star? So it would appear - almost from the beginning. But though there are few surprises here, Brady's search for the missing father and son becomes solidly engrossing - with a taut chase sequence, tragic violence, and some touching final revelations. Less comic than Brady's previous cases, short on puzzles and twists - but the narration is leanly effective (like early, unmannered Robert B. Parker), the New England locales are grittily persuasive, and Brady himself shows his moodier side while remaining a likable, low-key presence. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
