"Come in," he gently responded, and in walked to his astonishment a young woman, self-possessed, and evidently no novice in addressing people, or making herself understood--an interesting looking young woman, that but for a pale and troubled look might have been set down for decidedly good looking--he motioned her to take the only remaining chair in the room, and she did so in a matter of course sort of way. "Is your name Whiteside, sir; because I heard it was. I have heard too that you are nice and kind, your sermon was beautiful. You preached it for me--on purpose for me--may I speak to you on a tubjtct that lies very heavy on my heart?" Charles Whiteside was not the man to be-ruffled in the least by any such cnrious interruption to his Vestry room as this, and he encouraged his visitor by a few kind words to unburthen her mind to him. "Indeed, sir, the devil is abroad where I am obliged to pass my life, and it surpasses me, how he is to be subdued? I'm a waitress, sir, by profession, not a barmaid you know, and my work is hard enough, but I don't complain of that. It's human nature you know, sir, for the like of me to take an interest in some customers as are kind to me. Some are very kind. I hope, sir, you will excuse me if I tell you that I have taken a great interest in a young gentleman, who" (and here she seemed to hesitate and faltered so much that Mr. Whiteside had to encourage her by telling her more
