Description

This is the second volume of what will be a magnificent compendium of taxonomic information about the more than 17,000 species of plants that grow in the United States and Canada. Volume 2 presents taxonomic treatments for the pteridophytes and gymnosperms (whisk ferns, horsetails, clubmosses, ferns, cycads, ginkgos, conifers, and gnetophytes). As in the first volume, identification keys, summaries of habitats and geographic ranges, distribution maps, pertinent synonymies, descriptions, chromosome numbers, phenological information, and other significant details are given for each species. Line drawings are included for species with special morphological characteristics. Treatments are written and reviewed by distinguished experts in systematic botany and are based on original observations of herbarium specimens supplemented by critical reviews of the literature. The 12 volumes that will comprise this compendium are uniquely important in that no comprehensive flora of North America currently exists. This volume is an essential addition to the libraries of professional and amateur botanists and plant taxonomists.show more

Review quote

excellent compendium Flora of North American North of Mexico ... an excellent synthesis, accumulating and critically sorting large amounts of botanical information. It will undoubtedly become the most valuable reference compendium of the North American Flora for all American, European as well as all the other botanists. * Folio Geobotanica & Phytotaxonimica, 32/7, 1997 * 'This authoritative, many-headed work is centred at the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis. The work draws authority from real plant specimens ... This is a dictionary of plant species, the working vocabulary of plant biodiversity, as essential to its knowing, productive users as any big dictionary ... its purpose is to become the arbiter of our plants for conservation and study.' Scientific American, May 1994 'the first comprehensive continental flora of North America ... "Vegetation," by M.G. Barbour and N.C. Christensen presents a clear, concise classification of major vegetation types. This volume is copiously illustrated with excellent maps, graphs, and photos, including numerous portraits of historical figures in North American botany ... the botanical information is presented in a competent fashion.' Western Journal of Applied Forestry 'The first volumes of FNA are finally out, and what a magnificent production they are. Volume 1 contains many fine essays giving an overview for the flora of The United States, Canada, and Greenland.' Rudolf Schmid, University of California, Taxon Vol. 43 (February 1994)show more
