Fish, Blood and Bone is Leslie Forbes' brilliant second novel. It tells the fascinating story of three families who all believe themselves to be descendants of a Victorian botanical explorer, Magda Ironstone and her husband, Joseph, a Calcutta opium planter involved in a series of murders that suggest he may have been Jack the Ripper. The secret haunts each succeeding generation until the truth is revealed by a modern Himalayan expedition. Retracing Magda's last exploration with her 'anonymous' guide and lover, Hari Rivers, an Indian botanist whose disappearance left his work on cancer inconclusive, the modern expedition will come close to finding Hari's lost cure for cancer, only to lose it again because of old crimes. The action takes place in and around three gardens - physical and imaginary - and slips between the late 19th and 20th centuries, between London's walled domestic cloisters, the opium gardens of Bengal and the wild valleys mapped in Britain's great triangulation of the Himalayas.
The story opens in the present with three main characters, a young gardener Sally Rivers who is brutally murdered, her best friend Claire Fleetwood, a forensic photographer and descendant of Magda Ironstone, and Jack Ironstone, another descendant, distant cousin of Claire's and biochemist, whose lives come together when Jack tries to disinherit Claire from Magda's old house and garden, and investigations into the families' past begins. Written with all the sophistication and intelligence that was so dazzling in Bombay Ice, Fish, Blood and Bone is a less complicated, less layered story and every bit as gripping. (The title is from an organic fertiliser, a mixture of nitrogen, phosphates, potash and trace minerals).
