Description

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1908 edition. Excerpt: ...one may be certain as to the declension of any masculine polysyllabic, since all others that have not the specific endings of the first class of the strong declension, or of the weak, belong to the second class of the strong declension. The question of umlaut in the first class of the strong declension will again require special attention, however. The vast majority of feminine nouns belong to the weak declension. 90?utter and Sod)ter belong to the first class of the strong declension, those ending in ni3 and fal to the second. By learning the list of feminine monosyllabics that belong to the second class of the strong declension one may be sure of the declension of any feminine noun. Practically all neuter monosyllabic nouns belong either in the second or third class of the strong declension. The only way to be sure of the declension of a neuter monosyllabic, therefore, would be to learn all those belonging to one class or the other. Since this would necessitate a great deal of useless memorizing it would be better to make oneself familiar with the most common monosyllabic nouns of each class. There are no neuter nouns in the weak declension. Therefore, if one learn the characteristic endings of neuter nouns of the first class of the strong declension, and the few polysyllabic neuter nouns belonging to the third class and to the mixed declension, one may be sure of the declension of all neuter polysyllabics. Complete lists of nouns will be found in articles 104-119 of the Grammar. GRAMMAR DRILL. WRITTEN EXERCISES. i.
