We know that light is closely connected with heat. We have seen a piece of iron heated until it gives out light; at first a dull red light, then we say it is "red hot," but afterward a brilliant white light, and then we say it is "white hot;" and we shall see on pages 84 and 122 how sunlight may be made to set fire to wood and paper by means of curved mirrors and lenses. Still very bright lights may be produced without great heat, as in the case of the incandescent electric lights, where comparatively little heat is produced. It is possible that we may never know what light is, but if our minds are properly active we shall by our daily observations learn more about what light does every day we live. It is the purpose of this book to furnish an impulse toward such study. The chapter just finished has dealt with light traveling in straight lines. The next chapter will treat of light meeting in its course with some object which turns it backward or, as we say, reflects it. The third chapter will show how light in traveling through transparent substances may be bent from a straight line, or refracted. All visible objects must send forth light.--In Chapter I we have used a caudle to furnish rays of light for our study; in Chapters II and III we shall use other objects to furnish light, and it must be remembered that any object which we can see must send rays of light to our eyes--it may be that it does not produce its own light but only reflects light; if so, it becomes invisible to us in the night when there is no light to reflect.
