"Why," replied Mr. Antonio, "he had been an old miner for years; had worked in many of the mines in the Old World and the United States West and South. Finally, he procured the Colorado property where, for a long while he had worked the mine in a crude way, having no money with which to make many improvements. At first he secured a foothold by purchasing one or two lots rich in ore, where the site for a gold mill was good and the opportunity for a dam and race all that could be desired. He added little by little to his first purchase until he had secured a tract of many hundred acres." Our eyes grew larger and larger as Mr. Antonio dwelt upon these important facts. "Did he take you all over the ground?" asked Sue. "Yes; and I found it was finely timbered with all kinds of timber suitable for mining purposes." "And did you see quantities of gold?" I asked. He smiled. "I discovered, upon going further into the mine, a mountain ridge that crossed the property in a northeast and southwest direction; this ridge was of a gold bearing formation, and within it, in a space of one hundred and eighty feet in width were six veins of gold running parallel, along the entire ridge, from thirty to forty feet apart." "O I" we both exclaimed. "These gold veins," he continued, "were from three to fifteen feet in width; the walling in which the veins were imbedded were of talcose mica, slate, or schist, as was also the space between the veins, all of a soft formation.
