Review Text

1949. Vicky Hampden flees the austerity of post-war Britain and the clutches of Judge Christopher Hampden, her authoritarian father. Aided by her late Aunt's legacy she travels to France. Vicky is looking for the love of her life Phillipe d'Icere, presumed dead in the war. But is he? And is he the selfless, kind resistance hero described by some or the vicious, crooked Gestapo informant claimed by others? Hot on her tail is solicitor Jules Drummond sent by Vicky's father to bring her back to heel. Drummond is reluctant about his task, feeling that at 25, Vicky Hampden is quite old enough to know her own mind, but then a week in France away from fog and rationing is very persuasive. So the stage is set for a novel of mystery, intrigue and a little romance set in Paris and South-West France. Elizabeth Pewsley's eighth novel is fast-paced, charmingly written and full of entertaining dialogue. Though the mystery, intriguing enough at the start becomes fragmented by a plethora of peripheral characters, who struggle to break away from the archetypes they have been moulded from. Entertaining but slight. A good easy summer read to whet your appetite for foreign destinations. (Kirkus UK)show more
