While pure air is essential yet a strong downward current of cold or damp air upon the heads of the children may be a serious damage to health. Some of the ladies of the Committe, even with hats and wraps, were troubled with this cold current. But it descended upon the uncovered heads and unprotected shoulders of the children. It strikes us there is a deficiency of equipment in the way of maps, charts, globes and microscopes. A good terrestrial globe in each of the rooms of the two lower floors would be of the greatest service in teaching geography and even some parts of arithmetic ("longitude and ti1I-1e,") while a good fifteen dollar miscroscope in each of the upper rooms would be of immense value in arousing thought and creating interest in primary botany iand natural history. One or two hundred dollars would be well expended in this direction. We notice with pleasure the excellent iinstruction in drawing and architecture', and the beautiful specimens upon the blackboards in the different rooms. The proficiency of the pupils in reading seems to us not so good. Possibly more time needs to be devoted to this foundation of all knowledge and all accomplishments. We suggest that pens, pencils, paper and erasers should be furnished by the city, or at least should be under the entire control of the teachers, and taken up from all desks daily. Otherwise they are lost, mislaid or out of order, to the serious hindrance of work and unnecessary expense to parents who can often ill afford it.
