My enquiries in such villages as afforded plots for comparison, shewed difierences in measurement varying from nothing up to 60 per cent. increase; indeed, in some villages in Bandgaon Ifound that at the last settlement the plots were over-measured, the areas calculated at the present survey being less. 134. As, however, the principle of giving a measurement allowance had Measurementanowmce given been adopted, the Director considered, and I ' agreed with him that an all-round allowance of 10 er cent. would be suificient in Porahat, and 5 per cent. in Bandgaon and hainpur to meet every requirement (vide Director of Land Records' inspection note paragraph 11 dated 5th August 1902). The, reason for the slmaller allowance in Bandgaon was, that the lands were closely measured in the previous settlement of 1880-81, as the zamin_dar was living on the spot, and the amins had less opportunity to undermeasure. Chainpur had been measured in 1887 under the superintendence of Mr. Slacke, I.c.s., and it was fair to assume that the areas were as exact as the method of measurement permitted.
