Review Text

In 1940 the Book of the Month put their seal of approval on The Trees, Richter's second novel, a book which bore the fruit of his promise. Now comes its sequel (there has been one novel in between)- this takes up the story of Sayward, the girl who as a child carried the burden of a motherless family on the frontiers of Ohio territory. Sayward in The Fields is fully realized. Her husband, the young attorney from Boston, is of secondary importance- devoted as she is to him, hers is a wholly matriarchal regime, and Sayward is the focus of the story- of the settlement slowly, painfully, becoming the nucleus of a town. It is Sayward who gives the land on which the church is built- then the school- then the village store. It is Sayward who presides at births and deaths and marriages. Sayward who works in the fields she loves-battles against the ever-encroaching trees- holds her fast-growing family together. There's grandeur and humor and pathos here- a superb saga of American womanhood. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
