Psychiatrist Julia Cabot's life has always gone according to plan -- until her husband's charming affability explodes into violence. Terrified for her life and the safety of her children, Julia runs. Former bodyguard Mitch Garrison is trained to protect, but something went fatally wrong five years ago when his wife was shot helping an abused woman. Mitch's nightmares come to life when Julia appears, a jagged purple bruise marring her face. Mitch can't turn his back, so he resigns himself to a temporary co-existence. This delights Julia's four-year-old twins, who think Mitch is the angel they wished for because they found feathers on the floor near him. Mitch's intimidating presence makes Julia uneasy, but she knows that same aura of danger will keep her estranged husband away. To her surprise, she also sees a gentle side of Mitch when he plays children's games according to the twins' made-up rules.Watching Julia build a new life, Mitch realizes he cares for her and needs to resolve issues in his own past so he can move forward. He goes back to the town where his wife was murdered and discovers a renegade cop was hiding at the scene that night. Determined to prove who really killed his wife, Mitch has a new direction. While Mitch is out of town, Julia's estranged husband breaks into the house where she is staying, not knowing Julia has acquired street smarts, self-defense skills and a mongrel dog the size of a small bear. When Mitch returns, he is impressed with how well Julia handled the situation, but is swamped with guilt that he wasn't there. Alarmed that Mitch can wear a gun so easily, Julia is nonetheless drawn to the raw masculine energy that is suddenly focused on her. Julia knows she has to get away from Mitch or lose the independence she is trying hard to build, so she moves into an apartment while her divorce becomes final. Mitch tries to respect Julia's need for time away from him, but when Christmas nears, he can't bear the separation any longer. He takes a Christmas tree to Julia and her children, which they decorate with strings of popcorn and ornaments the twins make, just like a family.Furious, Julia's ex-husband kidnaps the twins, thinking this will force Julia to return to him. Instead, Mitch and Julia launch their own search, which leads them to the area of the state where Mitch grew up. As they battle a ferocious winter storm and accidents, they also realize Julia's ex-husband is working with two accomplices -- one of them the renegade cop who killed Mitch's wife. Mitch's need to be the protector and Julia's determination to be totally independent evolve into teamwork to find the children before they are harmed. Finally, the kidnappers are cornered near the small mountain town of Halo. One accomplice dies in a frenetic struggle with Mitch, but Julia's ex-husband escapes to find her and beg her forgiveness. The renegade cop shows up and shoots him, then disappears when deputies swarm the scene. As Julia's ex-husband lays dying, he reveals the twins are hidden in an old gold mine, which is honeycombed with a maze of tunnels. When the renegade cop starts shooting at them, the tunnels begin to collapse. Mitch and Julia race toward the surface with the twins as tons of dirt and debris implode inside the mountain behind them. Looking back, Mitch knows the renegade cop who helped kidnap the twins and killed his wife has finally faced justice. With her new experience and confidence, Julia is no longer willing to settle for anything less than a passionate love. Mitch is now able to put the past behind him and is ready to embrace the future with a wife he loves and children he adores, so he accepts Julia's proposal of marriage. The twins aren't surprised. In a town called Halo, there are many angels to make wishes come true.show more
