Description

This revised and updated book concerns the great changes that have taken place in farming in Britain. Traditionally the British farm had a sound basis, every farm was stocked with animals in order to grow good crops. This is very different to the farm today which has inexorably been forced into specialization, mechanization and mass production, all of which involve heavy investment. The arable farm today tends to be very large and to be completely equipped with heavy tractors, cultivating implements, combine drills and harvesters and grain-drying equipment. It relies totally on chemical fertilizer rather than on animal manure. The author explains how farming has become ever more competitive and regrets how its role as a pleasant and leisurely way of life in the countryside is past. The author wrote and took the leading part in the BBC Childen's Hour Programme, "Cowleaze Farm".show more
