On the contrary, when this custom is neglected, the greatest difficulty often arises, through the death or forgetfulness of the parties, in ascertaining where the necessary document is to be procured; so much so, that the settlement of a child in life, or the disposal of property, is often considerably affected by it. I have known an instance myself, where the only daughter of a nobleman could obtain no clue to her baptismal register, her parents having been travelling at the time of her birth, and by their not preserving any papers on the subject, the difficulties that arose in the management of her property, for want of it, were incalculable. I send this as a hint to families; but, perhaps, Mr. Editor, you will show them that it is a duty to attend to these things. Your obedient Servant, A Retired Lawyer. The truth of our Correspondent's remarks is fully borne out, by advertisements repeatedly to be seen in the public papers, offering considerable rewards for the discovery of the baptism, marriage, &c, of different parties; indeed they are often of such importance, that legal affairs cannot be carried on without them: and we agree with our Correspondent, that it is the duty of every head of a family carefully to note all occurrences of the kind, and to preserve the papers for the benefit of his posterity.
