Review Text

Wendy Holden is one of the most stylish and enjoyable practitioners of witty contemporary fiction at work today, and her strong, vividly drawn characters are always woven into narratives that marry a sure comic touch to constantly surprising plots. Holden is always good at putting her female characters through the wringer we may not always like them initially (as here), but after their trials and tribulations have left their mark were usually on their sides. This is Holdens cleverest outing yet, with particularly well-drawn heroines. Ruthless, attractive Belinda has set her sights on bagging a rich and famous man, and nothing is going to stop her. But she has a problem: her job. Putting words into the mouths of low-grade celebs for a downmarket tabloid is something shes good at, but shes simply not encountering the richer pickings of the megastar bracket, and shes getting frustrated. Gentler, less forceful Grace desires only a quiet life, but her hands are full dealing with a self-centred boyfriend, a relentlessly matchmaking mother and a publishing job that puts her at the mercy of selfish, demanding authors. Both women find their lives turned upside down, and initially their dreams seem to be coming true but (needless to say) Holden has no intention of making things easy for them, and both are soon wishing they had their old lives back. This is Holdens fourth novel, following the amazing success of her debut Simply Divine, and all the usual comic skills are fully in place here, with the quirky characterization that is her trademark. Itll be a strong-minded reader who can put down it after the first couple of chapters. (Kirkus UK)show more
