A little usage will show modifications and uses not mentioned here. The scales can be made on tracing linen or celluloid and be preserved. Experienced users of ratio sheets often pencil them roughly on the side of a sheet and transfer the graduations to a strip of paper. This can be done in a few moments and is preferable to hunting for a formally prepared one. Scale For Slopes There is another form of reading scale, which determines percentages of increase or decrease by the slopes of the lines. It is illustrated in Figure 31. It is transferred to tracing linen or celluloid and the "pole" applied to the base of the percentage problem. Necessarily the scale must be kept exactly horizontal. It is limited in its use as it can only be applied to the one plate for which it is intended and in which the lateral intervals for the periods are the same. These are shown by the dotted vertical lines. Should the width between them, be greater or less, the scale cannot be used. Primarily, this type of scale applies only to slopes between the first two dotted vertical lines representing a period interval. Should comparisons of long swings be made, it must be borne in mind that the rate indicated is a compounded one. Thus should the 10% line coincide with the average slope of a graph extending from A to C, the point at B is 10% above A; the point at C, however, is not 10% above A but is at some amount resulting from the value at A being compounded at 10% for six periods.
