Too often the importance of supplying cows with an abundance of water is not realized. Protein--The cow uses the protein in feed to build up parts of her body such as muscles, skin, hair, and horns, and to provide the protein that appears in her milk. She must have a certain amount of protein else she cannot maintain her body and produce milk. A cow weighing 1000 pounds may be producing 40 pounds of 4 per cent milk daily. In order to maintain her body and to produce this amount of protein, she must obtain from her feed.7 pound protein for maintenance and 2.6 pounds for milk production, or a total of 3.3 pounds. If less than 3.3 pounds of protein are provided, then the cow will not be able to give 40 pounds of milk daily but will give only such amount as the amount of protein in her feed warrants. Carbohydrate and Fat--These two provide energy for the cow to carry on her work. They furnish fat for the cow's body and for the fat of milk. In addition, they make up the sugar in milk. Ash or Mineral--If a feed is burned, the part left is the ash. Ash is made up of a number of minerals, the most important of which are calcium, phosphorus and sodium chloride or common salt. Bones and muscular tissue require minerals, and they must also be provided for milk. Cows must have an ample supply of minerals if they are to carry on successfully their work of production and reproduction. CHEMICAL ANALYSIS In analysing feeds, the chemist usually reports the amount of protein, fat, carbohydrate, water, ash, and crude fiber that he finds. Crude fiber is a woody-like carbohydrate.
