Review Text

As an American, George chooses to set her novels in England, and her sense of place is utterly unerring. Featuring the aristocratic detective Lynley, these three tales represent George at her most adroit. Lynley makes a cameo appearance in the title story, which takes place during a course on the Great Houses of Britain, at which a course member is killed. 'I, Richard' is an even more beguiling tale, with a protagonist who has spent years pursuing a letter written by Richard III on the eve of the Battle of Bosworth. Like all collectors, his passion for acquiring the coveted object knows no bounds, but is he prepared to kill for it? The final story, 'The Surprise of His Life' is a wonderfully inventive spin on the classic tale of a man deciding to murder his wife. This is a collection that will win George many new readers.
