I want you to do something with the place. Something epic.

After being entrusted with her brother's Los Angeles apartment for the summer as a graduation gift, Emi Price isn't sure how to fulfill his one condition: that something great take place there while he's gone. Emi may be a talented young production designer, already beginning to thrive in the competitive film industry, but she still feels like an average teen, floundering when it comes to romance.

But when she and her best friend, Charlotte, discover a mysterious letter at the estate sale of a Hollywood film legend, Emi must move beyond the walls of her carefully crafted world to chase down the loose ends of a movie icon's hidden life, leading her to uncover a decades' old secret and the potential for something truly epic: love.

Accolades for Hold Still:

2010 William C. Morris Honor Book; YALSA Best Books for Young Adults (2010); Publishers Weekly Flying Start

Hold Still may be the truest depiction of the aching, gaping hole left in the wake of a suicide that I've ever read. But it's anything but depressing and gloomy--it's also about the tender shoots of new relationships that grow unexpectedly out of tragedy. A haunting and hopeful book about loss, love, and redeption. -Gayle Forman, author of If I Stay

A beautifully written, gently moving account of a long goodbye that will resonate with anyone who has ever had to let go before they were ready. -Sara Zarr, author of Once Was Lost

Our customer reviews

First things first, can I just take a minute to talk about how amazing it was to read a book with a LGBT+ character where there isn't this big deal about her coming to terms with her sexuality or anything of the sort. Also: multicultural character. I also really enjoyed how it dealt with a different aspect of the movie industry. The main character isn't an actress or director or anything super ~glamourous. Emi is a production designer, and it's so damn awesome. Emi was one of the greatest main characters that I've read in a while. Her character growth is amazing and her passion for set design was kind of inspiring. Charlotte is so supportive of Emi, but she still has her own life and her own dreams. Jamal was an absolutely fantastic character as well. We didn't get too see him much as he was introduced later on in the novel, but I fell hard. Last but not least, Ava. The great mystery. I loved the direction her character took in this book. There isn't much that I didn't like about this story, however I do feel like there are a couple loose ends that didn't quite get tied up. But this is just me playing the semantics game. An uplifting story that left me with tears in my eyes.show more

What a fun and charming summer read. I flew through the pages and really enjoyed going on Emi???????????????¢??s journey with her. If you???????????????¢??re looking for light contemporary reads for the summer, this is definitely a book to pick up. What makes it stand out from other YA contemporaries is the setting. It???????????????¢??s entirely set in the Hollywood film world. The reader is taken behind the scenes with Emi???????????????¢??s job to see all the effort and thought that goes into how movie sets are constructed. I had never really put much focus into looking at set designs when watching movies until now. Emi???????????????¢??s world is a neat one to jump into for a fresh perspective, plus I really enjoyed her voice. It???????????????¢??s a wonderful story with excellent writing on Nina Lacour???????????????¢??s part. If you???????????????¢??re a fan of YA contemporaries, check this one out before the summer is through because, let???????????????¢??s be honest, a nice light contemporary adventure pairs perfectly with the summer time. (Also on a side note, the cover is gorgeous. Am I right?)show more
