Every Human Matters : Talking to the Culture
What is a human being? Why does it matter? Are we nothing more than bodies, or is there a deeper, spiritual component (a soul) to us? What difference does it make? These questions might be the most important questions we can ask and answer in trying to promote greater respect for all human beings and stemming the violence committed against members of the human family. This book explores the challenges facing us in trying to properly answer these questions and proposes an approach to "defining" and describing "human being." We are much more complex and amazing to settle for answers that leave no room for the inclusion of a spiritual dimension to human life. It is precisely here, the body united to a soul in one human being, where we find the answers to our deepest questions and yearnings. This is also where we can begin to build a greater respect for all human life and work toward peace with one another. This book also applies the discussion of "what is a human being" to the issues of contraception, abortion, third-party reproduction, assisted suicide, euthanasia and caring for vulnerable persons.
