Thou, the God of truth, hast assured us, that thy bleating makcth rich, and thou addest no sorrow with it May we more deeply feel the consoling import, and the unshaken fidelity of the assurance. May we find that, in thy paternal regard, and in its blessed effects, there is no mixture of uncertainty or change. Let us not suppose, that thou hast forgotten to be gracious, when we are visited with disappointments, losses, and trials. As the captain of our salvation was made perfect through suffering, so it pleases thee, by the same means to improve his faithful followers. Far, then, from considering those events and circumstances, which are the most opposed to our wishes, as evidences that thou art deficient or wavering in thy kindness, may we receive them as maiks of true affection, and submit to them thankfully, as well as meekly. May we find cause of never-failing gratitude, that though chastened, we are not killed; that if we be as sorrowful, we are yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, yet, in thy favour, possessing all things. Whatever hours of gloom and perplexity are appointed to us during the remainder of our pilgrimage, may they be cheered by the light of thy countenance; and, in the valley of the shadow of death may it prove to us as the dawn of a day which shall never be overcast with clouds. We earnestly pray that the great principle by which we wish our own course to be, in all points, directed, may more generally prevail and operate among men; especially among the professed followers of the way of life in Christ Jesus.
