Review Text
This mild little trifle is subtitled: Or, The Brassbound Beauty, the Bearded Bicyclist, and the Gold-Colored Teen-age Grandfather. At the center of all the fuss are the mortal remains of a lady who might or might not have been Chaucer's girlfriend, and whose resting place contained a mighty brass piece of valuable vintage. On the trail are bearded American Anglophile Alfred Hooper, who has difficulty steering his spade away from water and gas mains; an aging teen-age rock hero whose birds are encouraged not to sing concerning his performance in the bedchamber, and an assortment of expatriate Americans who have taken over the pastoral British suburb. Much stumbling in and out of cottages, parties, night roamings, and a grand flood from a burst water main concludes the pother. A farcical clutter of Wodehousian intent without the Master's efficient and singleminded madness. (Kirkus Reviews)
