Review Text

This seeks to examine many of the basic tenets of American political thinking, centering much of its attention on Lincoln and Jefferson and most particularly on the famous Lincoln-Douglas debates. Mr. Jaffa's knowledge and analysis of these debates were established prior to this work and though his high repute in this area may not be increased here, it is certainly confirmed. However when he drifts into discussions of civil liberties and natural law he becomes obscure and uninteresting. His conception of government by the virtuous seems to make the same visceral appeal that was utilized in the '64 elections. His views on the importance in American political thinking of the Declaration of Independence are not novel but well stated. Most of his opinions are in line with much of the current thinking among the intellectuals on the right and should be of interest to those seeking to establish the conservative position.
