Excerpt: ...important than money relief, is being given, the work is being supported with an expenditure of 1$400,000 a month, this money being raised in the different communities and administered under the direction of local committees, the American Red Cross seeking only to aid in organizing the neighborliness of each town to serve its men in khaki. Tm: NURSE AND rm: RED Caoss. The American Nurses' Association in 1909, by an afliliation with the American Red Cross and by cooperation with it, organized the Red Cross Nursing Service. In 1911, by proclamation of the President, the American Red Cross was authorized as the only volunteer agency permitted to render aid to land and naval forces in time of war. This made the Red Cross Nursing Service the reserve of the Army and Navy Nursing Corps. The recent war has made heavy demands upon the registered nurse--s0 heavy, in fact, that a special enrollment has been authorized to include the Home Defense nurse. In such capacity the nurse rends invaluable service, for she frees the nurse who can go overseas; and a woman enrolling in this group puts herself on record for service at home. The valor, intelligence, and spirit of sacrifice of the nurse in war time can never be put into words. Whether at home or abroad, she serves as truly as does the "man behind the gun." The Red Cross educates the women for nursing. Special courses in elementary hygiene, home care of the sick, first aid to the injured, and in dietetics are given by many Red Cross chapters, and the work is growing steadily.
